What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a medical field that focuses on women throughout pregnancy and during the birthing process. While some obstetricians stop their care there, Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology also offers postnatal care. Our goal is to walk with you through every step of pregnancy and birthing into motherhood, giving you the support you need to feel comfortable and confident as a new mom.

What should I expect from pregnancy care?

When you choose Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology, you get care tailored to each phase of your pregnancy.

Prenatal care

While you’re pregnant, you’ll be visiting Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology often for checkups. For healthy pregnancies, we generally recommend visits every four weeks for the first 28 weeks, then every two weeks from weeks 28 to 35, followed by weekly visits until you give birth. Starting at week 12, Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology offers ultrasounds administered by our American College of Radiology-accredited technicians so you can see your baby and watch their growth and development.

On top of monitoring your pregnancy through these regular visits, Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology also uses the prenatal months to help you prepare for motherhood.

Birthing

All of the months of your pregnancy culminate in one special moment: birth. Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology’s dedicated physicians guide you through this process, following your birthing plan as closely as possible while working to ensure you deliver a healthy baby into the world.

Postnatal care

After birth, the work of motherhood is just getting started. Albany Obstetrics & Gynecology stays involved with you during this important time, addressing breastfeeding concerns, helping your body heal, and watching for signs of postpartum depression. We include standard postpartum care for six weeks after birth. However, additional care will be provided more frequently as the need arises.
